Muqarnas Pavilion
More than 3,000 carved pieces, and no nails.
Joachim Tantau built this pavilion as his degree project at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London.
It draws on Moroccan architecture. The muqarnas, the three-dimensional geometric pattern that lines the inside of the dome, follows the design principles found in Moroccan palaces and in the Alhambra in Spain. The dome is made of more than 3,000 pieces of wood, each carved by hand and held together by wooden joints alone, without nails or screws.
For the pavilion and the research behind it, Joachim Tantau received the Barakat Prize from HRH The Prince of Wales.
