After the Rain

A geometric garden in the desert of AlUla.

Joachim Tantau and Aline Marion were invited to an artist residency in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, by the Royal Commission for AlUla and the King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts. In five weeks they built a large installation in the courtyard of AlUla's new Design Gallery: a set of life-size Platonic solids and a field of spiralling, flower-like forms.

When rain falls on the desert, it blooms. Flowers push out of the rock towards the sky, and an order of leaves and petals appears where a day before there was only stone. After the Rain puts that moment into a structure: the crystal geometry of the minerals, and the plant life that grows out of them after the rain.
