Dodecahedron

Twelve pentagons in gold

A hand-gilded decorative sculpture.

Lime wood & gold leaf42 cm diameterOne of a kind2023
Dodecahedron: an open gilded frame of twelve pentagons on a pale ground.

The form

Twelve pentagons, closing into a sphere.

Twelve pentagons, each touching five others, close into something very close to a sphere. The dodecahedron is one of the five Platonic solids and the hardest of them to build: every angle has to be right, or the last pentagon will not close.

The frame is lime wood, water-gilded with 23 carat gold leaf, and it is intriguing to look at, as the shapes change when one walks around it.

Gilded by hand.

The sculpture is made by Joachim Tantau in his studio near Hamburg. Every edge is water-gilded with 23 carat gold leaf, which leaves a surface that moves with the light.

The dodecahedron stands best on a table or shelf, which is not included. It is a one-off piece.
