The idea
Where two axes meet.
Axis Mundi is built on the meeting of a vertical and a horizontal axis, set out with compass and ruler and drawn out into four long, faceted blades.
The blades are carved in lime wood and gilded with 23 carat gold. Between the facets runs a strip of chrysocolla, and a garnet sits at the centre. As the daylight moves, the gold turns from warm to bright to almost dark.
Made by two pairs of hands.
The blades are carved by Joachim Tantau in his studio near Hamburg and gilded with 23 carat gold leaf. The chrysocolla and the garnet are cut, polished and inlaid by Aline Marion.
Axis Mundi is a one-off piece.
