Chartres

A cathedral on the wall

A hand-crafted wall panel in ebonised oak and gold.

Chartres: a tall black faceted wall panel with the floor plan of Chartres Cathedral in raised gilded shapes.

The idea

Celebrating a floor plan.

The floor plan of Chartres Cathedral is loaded with geometric proportion, and intricate in a way few buildings are. The panel was made to celebrate it: to bring the plan to light and show its beauty without turning it into a lesson in lines and circles.

The same geometry shapes the panel, whose facets follow the lines behind the floor plan. Every pillar and wall sits where the builders put it around 1200. Up close one sees individual gilded shapes standing proud of the black wood. From across the room they turn into a cathedral.

Made by hand.

The panel is made in Joachim Tantau's studio near Hamburg. Each pillar and wall of the plan is cut, gilded in 22.5 carat champagne gold leaf and set onto the ebonised surface of the faceted oak panel. It is a one-off piece.
